Ginseng (Ren Shen) – Functionalities and Benefits for Pets

While Ren Shen, otherwise known as Asian Ginseng, King of Herbs, or Panax Ginseng Root, is a common ingredient in foods in Asia, it has also been used as an herbal medicine for thousands of years to replenish a Qi deficiency.

While the root of this plant is often promoted as a dietary supplement to improve physical stamina, concentration, and memory, among other things, it is also frequently used by itself or in combination with other medicinal ingredients in traditional Chinese medicine. This is because the ginsenosides it contains are the pharmacologically active component in ginseng that has a myriad of effects on the body.

Ginsenosides are part of how the ginseng plant defends itself, similar to other plants that might produce insect repellents or anti-microbial substances. These naturally occurring ginsenosides not only function as antimicrobial and antifungal agents to protect the plant, the bitter taste also deters other animals from eating them. While this keeps many insects from eating the plant, it has not deterred humans from including it in many dishes.

In fact, in order for ginsenosides to become active in mammals such as you or your pet, it either must be ingested or absorbed via an ointment.

How GINSENG IS BENEFICIAL FOR PETS:

Anti-inflammatory: Studies have shown that ginseng can inhibit the production of certain proteins, decreasing the amount of inflammation experienced by the body.

Antioxidation: Oxidation is a chemical reaction that happens within the body that can create free radicals, causing a chain reaction that ultimately ends up damaging cells. Studies have shown that ginseng has an antioxidative property that helps improve recovery from an injury.

Inhibition of cell apoptosis: While cell death, or apoptosis, is a natural part of the cell lifecycle, there are certain factors that can cause falsely trigger this reaction in a cell. Ginseng has been found to help inhibit these signals.

Regulatory effect on nervous system: The combination of the factors mentioned above, in addition to providing their own benefits, also provide a neuroprotective mechanism that has a positive effect on the nervous system. It also has shown signs of improving neurological injuries by downregulating certain metabolic processes that occur within the body.

Ren Shen, or ginseng, and other derivatives of it are an important ingredient with a variety of powerful uses for your four-legged friends.
