4 Ways You Can Help Your Pet with Pain Relief

Dogs are very resilient and never give up. Even if they experience pain on the same level as us, they can mask it and carry on as if nothing is wrong. If your dog is in visible pain, that's a sign that its condition is worse than you realize. This is why it's essential to watch for any changes in your pet's behavior, energy level, or movement. If your dog exhibits any of the symptoms listed below, it is important to take them to the vet immediately.

Dogs show pain through dilated pupils, increased breathing rate, a lack of coordination (limping), shaking or trembling, muscle spasms, and a drooping head. The increased stress levels could also cause your pet to act differently.

Some of these behaviors include constant licking, aggression, restlessness, vocalizations (such as wailing or weeping), and hiding or avoiding human interaction. A slow gait, difficulty lying down or getting up, and reluctance to climb stairs or leap are all signs that your dog may be suffering from joint pain or an injury.

When your dog is hurting, here are some things you can do to make them feel better.

    Pain Relievers

While nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medicines (NSAIDs) can help relieve pain, you should never give your dog human NSAIDs. Over-the-counter pain relievers prescribed for humans can be harmful to pets.

Many over-the-counter pain relievers and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medicines (NSAIDs) are safe for dogs, but they may not be suitable for all animals. You should never self-medicate your dog with painkillers — always follow your vet's advice.

If you notice symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, or blood in their discharge, rush them to a pet clinic immediately.

    Physical Rehabilitation

If your dog has been diagnosed with osteoarthritis or hip dysplasia, mild exercise and physical treatment may be the best way to alleviate their discomfort. Acupuncture and massage are two forms of physical therapy that can help your dog.

If your dog needs medical attention, it's important to find a professional specializing in canine care. Swimming, a low-impact activity, is also great for dogs since it helps keep their muscles and joints in working order. If your dog isn't used to swimming, start with brief sessions and try having them wear a canine life vest for added support.
