Resveratrol (Japanese Knotweed) - Functionalities and Benefits for Pets

Resveratrol is a naturally occurring, very powerful antioxidant. While it can be easily found in peanuts and different berries, in eastern diets it is most prominently found in the skin of grapes. This is why wine, especially red wine that is fermented with grape skins, contains very high levels of resveratrol.

However, there is a plant native to Japan, as well as China, that has been used for centuries as an herbal supplement due to its high levels of resveratrol. This plant, known as the Japanese Knotweed, is an excellent source of both resveratrol and trans-resveratrol, which is the active form of the chemical that is most readily absorbed and utilized by the body.

This makes it a good remedy for inflammation of the skin and even arthritis.

Anti-oxidant properties: As the body processes food and reacts to it’s environment, cells produce waste, including free radicals, which can cause damage to those cells. The anti-oxidant nature of resveratrol can help slow or prevent damage to cells caused by these free radicals.

Cardio- and neuro-protective: The same properties that provide protection for the blood vessels also help prevent and manage cardiovascular diseases. The combined effects also benefit the nervous system.
